I recently picked up Playing at the World by Jon Peterson. This book is a history of the game Dungeon & Dragons.

Since many of my readers are Wiccan, I'll use an analogy that will make sense to them: Playing at the World does for D&D what Ronald Hutton's Triumph of the Moon did for Wicca. It explores the different elements and influences that resulted in D&D, and follows the chain of influence forward as D&D affected the world around it. [1] [2]

In part 1 of this Argothald story, I talked about the game's first players. In this part, I want to delve into how I designed part of the fictional world of Tala, the planet of the Argothald.

I want to tell a story about Argothald. It's a geek story. It spans 35 years and two worlds, one real and one fictional. There's no moral, no point, no great insight to be had. It's merely a story I wish to share.

It's also long enough that I want to split it into three parts.

Bookcases

My bookshelves were full of all the games I've purchased recently. The games had spilled over onto the floor, stashed in canvas bags so I could easily grab them to take to a friend's place or a game night.

A friend of mine had a couple of bookcases she had to give away. They were the same style as the Billy bookcases I already had. I took action.

I'm going to offer a demo of Fluxx: The Board Game on Thu July 25 at the regular board-game night at Hobbytown in Nanuet NY. The address is:

Hobbytown Nanuet
57 Rockland Center
Nanuet, NY 10954

The store has a board-game night every Thursday. Folks arrive to play games at 7:30PM. Gaming lasts at least until midnight, though there have been times when some dedicated gamers (like me) have stayed until 3AM! Of course, you can come and go as you like. If you arrive after 8PM, knock on the door.

This is not just an invitation to play FtBG. Come and meet the gamers. They play board and card games of all types and skill levels. Some are quiet, some are loud, all are fun to play with. I think you'll enjoy it!*

Typically we order out pizza. You can get other food (including veggie items) at the supermarket or the restaurants in Rockland Center.

For more information, see their Meetup and Facebook pages.

It's been a couple of years since I last posted about my fantasy role-playing game, Argothald. That game has been a part of my life for about 35 years, including a 20-year hiatus. If I'm to use this blog to document what's important to me, I should check in on Argothald once in a while.

I wasn't feeling well. I probably shouldn't have gone. But was I feeling a powerful case of cabin fever, and it was a chance to get another interview for the biography. So I went to Lunacon. this past Saturday.

I'm glad I did, though I paid for it the next day. To my pleasant surprise, it was better for me than last year. I interviewed Leslie Fish (though I forgot to ask her how good a singer Isaac really was); later I attended a filk sing for the first time in over 20 years.

I also did my usual share of gaming: Do Move Say (a great game for a large group of kids or kids-at-heart); Chez Geek (I was the second-best slacker); Munchkin Zombies.

And, as usual, I spent too much money on stuff.

One thing I noticed about this year's Lunacon is that the costuming was better than it had been in years. I don't know what brought about the reversal, but this year the costumers really "brought it" in terms of quality of both costumes and ideas. Brava and bravo! I may amend this post later with a few pictures.

Alas, no Werewolves of Miller's Hollow for me this year. I was feeling poorly at about 9PM, and I knew that if I tried to join that game I'd be there until at least midnight. Maybe next year!

I'm hosting a small gaming party at my place to welcome in the new calendar year.

I've continued to attend board-game night at Hobbytown in Nanuet NY on Thursday nights. I haven't blogged about each night, so this is a bit of a catch-up post. Here are some of the games I've played and enjoyed.

I have purchased the second expansion pack for Cards Against Humanity. I also purchased a card box (with dividers) so all the cards can be stored and played from a single place.

You have permission to tremble in fear, or in excitement. It's your choice. Thank you for your kind attention.

Last night, I returned to Hobbytown to attend their game night. I brought along a copy of Mage Knight. I wasn't sure that anyone would be interested in playing it, but I thought, "Either I'll have fun playing this game, or I'll have fun playing some other game. Either way I come out ahead."

I went to Hobbytown again last night for their game night. Once again, I had a good time, despite the fact I'd been feeling under the weather earlier in the day.

I played two games:

There's a game store in Nanuet NY, Hobbytown. Every Thursday they have a game night at the store, starting at 7:30PM or so and going until late in the evening. I've known about the game night for a few weeks, but I've been immersed in my health problems and haven't been able to go.

I'm trying to set up more game nights at my place. As part of that effort, I've described some of the games in my collection: Munchausen, Fluxx, Arkham Horror. I've recently added more games to my collection, and I plan to post about them to pique folks' interest.

Today's game: Mage Knight.

Today a group of friends came over to play some games. We played Cards Against Humanity (twice!) and Settlers of Catan. It was the first time I played either one of those games. I enjoyed myself, though I won neither game.

Good company, good games, good times. It was a healing experience. Once again, I thank all those who came.

Why I game

This.

It's why I've been post those game reviews, and why I struggle to schedule Argothald every month, and why I played World of Warcraft, and why I played in two LARPs for 14 years.
